In 1932, after munching on a bag of corn chips, C.E. Doolin, a small manufacturing chip business owner, purchased the recipe from a small store in San Antonio and began to sell his new product out of the back of his then Model T Ford. They were a hit. Meanwhile another business owner in the world of snacks, Herman W. Lay was also moving up in the snack domain and shortly after Doolin introduced America to corn chips, offered to go in with his small company, renaming it H.W Lay and Co. The brand skyrocketed.
In 1961 Frito and H.W. Lay Co. merged and Frito Lay was born. Today, 59% of the snack industry is dominated by Frito Lay, who also produces Cheetos, Doritos, SunChips and Tostitos. The company employs over 45,000 people and has received numerous awards such as an Environmental Commitment award from Plano, Texas in 2011, Pepsico Business Unit award in 2010 and the U.N. Association of N.Y. Humanitarian award in 2009. Dozens of other awards have also been won.
Frito Lay believes in supporting local farmers and using only the best quality ingredients, citing that “small steps we take today can make a big difference tomorrow.”
